Body piercing

The history of body piercing is as long as the history of mankind. For thousands of years piercing has played an important role in primitive societies. Whether part of an initiation ritual, a coming-of-age ceremony, a wedding, or a vision quest, piercing has been used as a form of body art, and as a permanent reminder of important life changes.

Reported from every geographical area from primitive times to the modern day, body piercing is a truly international phenomenon. And as the practice of piercing has grown away from its’ primitive roots, so too has it grown away from the primitive tools and techniques of previous times. Today body piercing is a safe and hygienic practice, conducted under sterile conditions for maximum safety and comfort.

At IN SKIN, you are assured of only the highest quality peircings and whatever your reason for choosing to be pierced, our training, experience, and attention to detail will ensure you get the most from your body adornment. A general price list is shown at the bottom of this page.

Although it seems that your skin is a simple covering, in fact it is the largest organ in your body, composed of many different pieces. The areas where these segments grow together are the areas traditionally associated with piercing – navel, nipple, nose, eyebrow, ear and so on. It is these invisible seams which allow something as soft and supple as skin to hold and secure a piece of jewellery.

Skin can be safely pierced anywhere, but it is only by understanding and working with the natural growth patterns that a secure piercing is achieved. A piercing in the wrong place is more likely to be slowly rejected by your skin – a phenomenon known as ‘growing out’.

Different types of jewellery can affect your piercing too – rings are more likely to irritate than barbels or bananabels, because they move around more - and jewellery made from different substances will suit the body chemistry of different people. If you have experienced any difficulties, please consult one of the piercers for advice. We have a large range of jewellery available to buy in the studio, and can also order jewellery in if we don’t have what you need.

In recent years, stretching piercings have become increasingly popular. At IN SKIN we can offer advice on this practise. To find out more details click on the link on the left hand side.

Piercings are a walk-in service anytime after 1pm during the week (closed Wednesdays) and all day Saturdays (except between 12-1pm).
